Call for Artist Submissions for Downtown Mural

Thursday Feb 7th, 2019

The Erie Downtown Partnership has partnered with the Erie County Chapter of the League of Women Voters to develop a mural project celebrating the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote across the country, which occurs in 2020.

The Erie Downtown Partnership is requesting proposals from local artists to develop a mural design based on the theme using the artist’s own research and approach to the artistic process.

Because of the nature of the mural theme and the scope of the celebration intended by the Erie County Chapter of the League of Women Voters, the project planning committee is requesting that all artist submissions in response to the request for proposals be led by a female artist.

This project is part of the Erie Downtown Partnership’s most recently launched Art + Activation initiative, which kicked off earlier in the year with the placement of the organization’s first public art project at 915 State Street.

In May 2018, the organization collaborated with local artists Tom Ferraro and Ed Grout to design and install a colorful mural titled “I am…I will be…Erie’s Future”. This mural was a celebration of Erie’s ethnic diversity, including refugees and new Americans, and provided opportunities to collaborate with the International Institute Erie and the newly formed Erie High’s English as a Second Language students.

Over 100 people attended the unveiling and dedication.  This project received a lot of positive public feedback and was a trending topic among local social media channels and influencers.

With permission from the property owner where the mural is placed, a pocket park has been created in the lot next to the mural to make the mural as accessible as possible.

The RFP is available at: Mural Artist RFP for LWV Anniversary
Deadline for submissions is January 15, 2019.
